Details
Elegant, earthy, and full of history — Barro Wafer is a thick, hand-pressed edible clay made from a balanced blend of Mexican terracotta and barro clay. Each piece delivers a firm snap followed by a soft, chalky crumble that releases a rich wave of dry, red-earth flavour. Its dusty, smooth texture offers that satisfying clay “bite” without grit or stickiness. Often shaped from the reclaimed clay of traditional Mexican ceramics, Barro Wafer is as sustainable as it is sensory — a pure expression of Mexico’s soil and artistry in one delectable disc.

Traditional Clay Origins:
The barro wafer form has deep cultural resonance, tracing its lineage to the edible búcaros once crafted in Mexico and exported to Europe in the 16th–18th centuries. These clay figures and jars, shaped from fragrant Mexican earth, became prized among Spanish and Italian nobility — especially women — who practiced bucarophagy, the ritual of eating clay for its aroma, taste, and supposed healthful properties. Made from the same mineral-rich red clays once used in both pottery and culinary tradition, Barro Wafer captures this historic link between art, earth, and appetite — a smooth, sunbaked taste of Mexico’s timeless barro heritage.

Storage Tips
To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.
We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.

All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.
While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
