Details
Shattered in all the right ways — Broken Platitos are rustic fragments of handmade Mexican terracotta mini plates, known locally as platitos de barro. Each piece carries the deep, scorched aroma of true earthenware — a bold mix of metallic tang, dry dirt, and a faint cement-like aftertaste that’s unmistakably authentic. The crunch is medium-hard at first bite, breaking down into fine, edible granules with a gentle powdery melt. Expect a taste that’s both ancient and grounding — pure sunbaked Mexican soil in its most elemental form.

Traditional Clay Origins:
Rooted in Mexico’s pre-Columbian clay traditions, Broken Platitos echo a cultural lineage where earth was more than material — it was sustenance. In regions across South America, edible clay (known as chaco in Quechua and pasa in Aymara) has long been collected from rich altiplano deposits high in smectite minerals. These same clays were once used in ceremonial dishes and in earthy sauces where vegetables were cooked in clay mixtures for their mineral essence. Each fragment of Broken Platitos reflects this timeless connection — an edible nod to ancient craftsmanship and the living earth itself.

Storage Tips
To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.
We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.
Handling Guidelines
- clean, dry hands
Fragility Disclaimer
All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.
While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
