Earthy Crunch UK Clay consumption & safety: Frequently Asked Questions
Are your clay treats safe to eat?
Our clay treats are made from natural clays and are sold as sensory and hobbyist items. They are not sold as food products, supplements, or health items, and we do not encourage swallowing.
While some customers choose to taste or swallow clay as part of pica or geophagia, any decision to do so is entirely at your own discretion and risk. We are not able to guarantee suitability for ingestion.
Are Earthy Crunch UK products food-grade?
No. Our products are not produced or tested to food-grade standards, and we do not make any medical or nutritional claims.
Natural clays vary by source and batch and can contain trace minerals, including heavier minerals. Because of this natural variability, we cannot certify them as safe for consumption.
Can natural clay contain worms or parasites?
Natural clays originate from the earth, so in their raw state they may be exposed to environmental organisms.
Traditional preparation methods such as drying, roasting, or firing significantly reduce moisture, making the survival of parasites very unlikely. However, unless a product is processed and tested under laboratory food-grade conditions, no seller can offer a zero-risk guarantee.
If this is a concern for you, we strongly recommend not consuming the clay.
Does baking clay at home make it safer?
Some customers choose to bake or reheat their clay at home before use, as an added personal precaution.
While heat can reduce moisture and microbial presence, home baking does not make clay food-grade or risk-free. Any use beyond sensory play remains a personal decision.
Why don’t you encourage swallowing if you know people do it?
We understand that swallowing can be a meaningful part of the pica and geophagia experience for many people. We respect that lived experience.
However, as a small hobbyist business, we cannot encourage swallowing or market our products as edible food. Our responsibility is to provide clear information, not instructions or encouragement.
What are your clay treats intended for?
Our products are intended for:
-
sensory play and exploration
-
controlled tasting for pica
-
texture, crunch, and scent enjoyment
-
baking, crushing, or preparation rituals
Many customers enjoy them without swallowing at all.
Who should avoid consuming clay entirely?
We strongly recommend not consuming clay if you:
-
are pregnant or trying to conceive
-
have underlying health conditions
-
are immunocompromised
-
experience digestive or bowel issues
-
feel uncertain or anxious about safety
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to avoid consumption and seek professional medical advice.
Do your clays contain minerals or nutrients?
Natural clays can contain trace minerals, but we do not test for nutritional content or make any health claims. Our products should not be relied upon for dietary or medical purposes.
Can you provide lab testing or safety certificates?
At this time, we do not offer laboratory testing or food-grade certification. This allows us to remain transparent and honest rather than offering reassurance we cannot responsibly guarantee.
Where do your clays come from?
We work with small vendors and traditional sources, often from regions with long histories of clay use. For ultimate transparency, each product page clearly lists the country of origin and vendor wherever possible. This allows customers to explore sourcing details and, if they wish, research vendors and traditional practices independently before making a decision.
I still have questions — can I ask?
Absolutely. If you’d like more information about a particular product, its origin, texture, or intended use, please feel free to get in touch. We’re always happy to help where we can.
