Details

Nzu is a classic Nigerian edible clay, celebrated for its firm crunch, earthy mineral flavour, and traditional preparation. Also known as African Nzu or Calabash Chalk, this white kaolin clay is hand-processed using time-honoured methods: naturally sourced, lightly salted, shaped into small balls, and gently smoked. Each sphere delivers a satisfying, slightly dusty crunch that breaks down into a fine, creamy mineral powder. The flavour is immediately earthy and smoky, layered with subtle salty notes and basement-like kaolin undertones reminiscent of damp soil or petrichor. This batch is soft, crumbly, and lightly dusty, with minimal grit and a touch of stickiness if chewed in large amounts, making it a robust yet approachable experience for enthusiasts of traditional African clays.

Traditionally ground, lightly salted, shaped, and smoked, Nzu carries a distinctive earthy, smoky, and slightly salty flavour profile that reflects its cultural heritage. Valued for both its sensory qualities and grounding mineral content, Nzu has been used in geophagy, ritual practices, and wellness traditions for centuries. Today, it remains a staple for collectors and clay enthusiasts seeking a bold, authentic Nigerian edible clay experience.

Storage Tips

To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.

We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.

Handling Guidelines

  • clean, dry hands

Fragility Disclaimer

All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.

While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
