Details
African Ulo delivers a dense, flavourful crunch rooted in Nigeria’s long-standing clay traditions. This compact, uniform style offers firmer chunks than the typical layered varieties, with a dry surface and a mild inner flake. The taste leans deeply earthy with a whisper of smokiness and a subtle finish reminiscent of rain on asphalt or sun-warmed soil. Hard and satisfying to bite into, each chunk breaks crisply before softening into a slightly waxy, mineral-rich crumble. Less smoky than other Ulo types but still unmistakably grounded, this batch is ideal for those who prefer a mellow, consistent crunch without heavy layering.

Traditional Clay Origins
Ulo—also known across West Africa as Nigerian Ulo or smoked kaolin—has long been enjoyed for its grounded aroma, distinctive dryness, and characteristic bite. Traditionally sun-dried and naturally smoked, Ulo is prized for its rugged texture and rich mineral depth. This compact variety maintains the clay’s authentic flavour while offering a firmer, more uniform crunch. A staple in geophagy communities, Ulo remains a beloved edible clay for its earthy profile, cultural significance, and satisfying density.

Storage Tips
To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.
We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.

All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.
While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
