Details
African Ulo offers a hard, snappy crunch rooted in Nigeria’s long-standing clay traditions. This compact variety arrives in dense, uniform chunks with a dry exterior and a layered internal structure that breaks apart cleanly on the bite. Unlike creamier clays, Ulo does not turn sticky or gummy when chewed; instead, it fractures into flaky layers and settles into a mild, waxy mineral crumble with no grit. The flavour is deeply earthy and mineral-rich, carrying basement-dusty soil notes, cement-like earthiness, and a gentle smokiness that evokes the scent of rain on dry ground or sun-warmed asphalt. Less overtly smoky than some Ulo batches, this variety delivers a consistent, grounded experience that feels firmly tied to the land it came from.

Traditional Clay Origins
Ulo — often referred to as Nigerian Ulo or smoked kaolin — has been enjoyed across West Africa for generations for its distinctive dryness, firm bite, and mineral depth. Traditionally sun-dried and naturally smoked or roasted, Ulo is valued for its layered structure and unmistakably earthy profile. This compact style maintains the clay’s cultural authenticity while offering a harder, more uniform crunch that appeals to those who enjoy dense, land-driven mineral flavours. A staple within geophagy communities, Ulo continues to be prized for its grounding character and connection to place.

Storage Tips
To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.
We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.
Handling Guidelines
- clean, dry hands
Fragility Disclaimer
All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.
While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
