Details
First Snow by Taste Montana is a hand-foraged white edible clay from the open terrains of Montana, USA, first discovered in November 2025 and appreciated for its beautifully balanced texture and clean mineral character. Reminiscent of kaolin in appearance, this bright white clay delivers a dry, earthy “fresh plaster” taste with occasional bitter undertones, offering a satisfying crunch in firmer pieces while softer sections gently break down into a smooth, slushy finish — never sticky, always evolving.
Its naturally varied structure creates a layered textural journey: crisp edges give way to powdery softness, making each bite slightly different from the last. First Snow is ideal for those who enjoy contrast — crunch and crumble followed by a soft melt.

Traditional Clay Origins: White clays in Montana consist primarily of high-quality kaolinite (china clay) and, to a lesser extent, white-firing bentonites. Major deposits include the Lewistown kaolinite in the South Moccasin Mountains (Whiteware deposit near Lewistown), formed from hydrothermally altered shale and sandstone. Other occurrences are found within Cretaceous-aged formations such as the Whitemud Formation (equivalent to the Colgate Member of the Fox Hills Formation), as well as areas including the Whitehall/Cardwell mining district, Powell County, and the Cardwell Clay Pit. Certain light-coloured bentonites also occur within the Fort Benton Group. These clays are traditionally valued for their low iron content, suitability for whitewares, and strong high-temperature properties.
Availability: Limited — a newly discovered white clay experience for those who enjoy earthy bitterness, textural contrast, and a crisp-to-slush transformation.

Storage Tips
To keep your clays and treats fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour, always store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, humidity, and strong odours. Exposure to air or dampness can alter both texture and taste.
We highly recommend using our stash boxes, available on the website — designed specifically to protect and organise your clay collection with ease.
Handling Guidelines
- clean, dry hands
Fragility Disclaimer
All clay treats and terracotta pot products are handmade and naturally fragile, making them susceptible to breakage during delivery.
While we take great care in packing each item securely, minor cracks, chips, or crumbled pieces may occur. This is a natural part of working with handcrafted clays and does not affect taste or enjoyment.
